No effect of human chorionic gonadotropin treatment due to threatened abortion in early pregnancy for birth outcomes
نویسندگان
چکیده
Human chorionic gonadotropin (HCG) is used parenterally for treatment of threatened abortions and repeated spontaneous abortion in pregnant women. No controlled epidemiological studies of preterm birth and low birthweight newborns in pregnant women with HCG treatment have been published while the results of animal investigations were controversial. The data of 97 pregnant women with HCG treatment in the second and third months of pregnancy due to threatened abortion and/or previous spontaneous abortion(s) was compared with the data of other 38,054 pregnant women in the population-based large data set of the Hungarian Case-Control Surveillance of Congenital Abnormalities. There was no difference in mean gestational age at delivery and birth weight, in addition the rate of preterm birth and low birthweight newborns. Parenteral HCG treatment in the early pregnancy due to threatened abortion did not associate with a higher risk for preterm births or low birthweight newborns. However, a higher occurrence of gestational diabetes was found in pregnant women with HCG treatment and there was a slight male excess among newborn infants (p=0.06). © Versita Warsaw and Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

I-33: Early Assessment of Pregnancy Viability
Early determination of pregnancy viability is essential for women at risk for experiencing ectopic pregnancy or spontaneous abortion. Several markers of pregnancy viability have been identified including serial human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) monitoring and sonography, in addition to several less commonly available biochemical markers. An ideal test would be readily available, inexpensive an...
متن کاملPossible Teratogenic Potential of Human Chorionic Gonadotropin Treatment – A Population-Based Case-Control Study
Human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG) is used for treatment of pregnant women with threatened and repeated miscarriages/spontaneous abortions in Hungary. Thus the objective of the study was to evaluate the possible association of medically recorded hCG treatment during the second and/or third gestational month in pregnant women with the risk of different congenital abnormalities in their offspring...
متن کاملLow-Dose Urinary Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is Effective for Oocyte Maturation in In Vitro Fertilization/ Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection Cycles Independent of Body Mass Index
Objective Currently, there is no agreement on the optimal urinary derived human chorionic gonadotropin (u-hCG) dose requirement for initiating final oocyte maturation prior to oocyte collection in in vitro fertilization (IVF), but doses that range from 2500- 15000 IU have been used. We intended to determine whether low dose u-hCG was effective for oocyte maturation in IVF/intracytoplasmic sperm...
متن کاملEarly Maternal Serum β-human Chorionic Gonadotropin Measurements After ICSI in the Prediction of Long-term Pregnancy Outcomes: A Retrospective Cohort Analysis
BACKGROUND Initial low maternal serum β-human chorionic gonadotropin (β-hCG) is a good predictor of early pregnancy demise. Our objective was to determine its predictive value in determining the long-term outcome in ICSI pregnancies. METHODS A retrospective cohort study was designed at the Saudi Center for Assisted Reproduction. Two hundred and sixty-one women with ICSI pregnancies were follo...
متن کاملNew technologies permit safe abortion at less than six weeks' gestation and provide timely detection of ectopic gestation.
OBJECTIVE The previously held dictum that elective abortion before 6 weeks' gestation carried greater risks than a later procedure was challenged by this protocol. STUDY DESIGN This study evaluated a protocol for abortion before the customary 6 weeks' gestation. Patients willing to return to the clinic within 72 hours were given the option of elective abortion even when no gestational sac cou...
